WELCOME

Welcome to the Friends of Emerald Hill Library website. We are committed to the preservation, maintenance and promotion of a public library in South Melbourne, a local hub to the South Melbourne community, for all ages, young and old.

Emerald Hill is the historic name for South Melbourne. The library is situated opposite the South Melbourne Town Hall.

We not only support the local community and the library network, we provide various events, speakers and regular Book Club meetings for those interested in science fiction novels, non-fiction novels, creative writing exploration or topics focusing on arts, crafts and gardening.

Join us to hear from author, Moreno Giovannoni  discuss his second book, The Immigrants. A tenderly written portrait of postwar life for one Italian family living and working in Australia.

‘The Immigrates’ has been shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award and The Age Book of the Year Award 2026.

Join us in asking questions about his life experiences, his award-winning writing career, and about his latest book. Light refreshments provided.

Join us to hear from two young, notable authors, Penny Tangey and Victoria Brownlee discuss their recently released novels.

Victoria is an international food writer, who started writing about food over a decade ago. Her new book, The Writers Retreat is her first debut novel written in the thriller/mystery space.

Penny’s debut crime mystery, What Rhymes With Murder? is a hilarious new take on cosy crime, set within a charming, close-knit Melbourne community filled with nosy neighbours and a local cafe. A humorous book enjoyed by young and old adults. Light refreshments provided.
